Note from the Event Manager
“On behalf of the SCCA Central Carolinas Region Members and it’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank all of our drivers, crew, spectators and event staff that came together to make this another unforgetable weekend in Robbinsvile, NC.
Fourteen new novice drivers and many new cars including a Legends car, a TR8, a Firehawk Camaro, another 914-6, a Megabusa and an Alfa Romeo GTV! We enjoyed beautiful weather all weekend and while the sun was hot our lovely Umbrella Girls kept us in the shade while sitting in line for our runs. THANKS to the Cheerleaders from Robbinsville High School! Special thanks to our event staff… Registration with Vicki, Sue, Melissa and Jessica went very smoothly as Mark and Steve ran tech. Don Drennon led our workers beautifully as they handled situations, kept the course clean and runs in order. Timing and Scoring with Rich and gang has NEVER RUN BETTER. The hard wire system and work put in by so many has helped us to have a solid system… great job by our timing and scoring team and pre-event work by Steve Eckerich. Live timing and scoring worked well and Steven showed me locations all over where people were tracking our event and watching our scores from as far away as the Phillipines. Our grid was well run by Lance and our stewards/ race control / starters kept our drivers rolling and safe. Great social and the ribeyes were wonderful. The support from Robbinsville area was awesome… tourism helped us with advertising, planning, getting us grandstands and jersey barriers lined up, Sheriff’s department handled security both nights, Chamber covered parking for us both days and Graham County Transit authority shuttle buses ran great all weekend. Graham County EMS, Rescue Squad and Snow Bird Fire Department kept us safe and took great care of us. Ellers Wrecker service was pretty bored…and they LIKE that.
I would like to personally thank the Board of CCR… this is a great bunch to work with. Many worked behind the scenes in planning and many of them (and their wives) worked directly at the event… all spent a lot of hours to help make this event possible. They have supported this part of our region’s offerings not only because hillclimbing is a growing sport but because this is re-igniting a part of our Carolina’s regions history… Hillclimbing is what we we were known for in Southeastern motorsports. Aside from great motorsports competition, our hillclimbs are getting attention from the “outside” through spectators. They are bringing in new members, drivers and workers. And most importantly, it is bring sports car people together… to race, to socialize, to share, network and form new friendships and re-establish past acquaintances. What we are doing is larger and more far reaching than we realize. It gives us great memories to get through rough days in our lives and it gives us something to look forward to… doing it AGAIN.
We had many representatives from the media including John Webber, a contributing editor to Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports magazines. Dustin Webb was kind enough to take him for an exhibition run and let him experience sheer terror first hand on the hill! TJ Theodore also gave Tabitha Mylar, (Graham County Tourism Director) a run and she enjoyed it immensely. Our drivers and event staff did a great job as ambassadors for our sport… I heard many reports from spectators and kids that really appreciated how we dealt with them, the tourism and entertainment we brought to the area. THANK YOU… all for a wonderful weekend.
Looking back, it is hard to believe that this was Dragon V… but I am more excited about what it is yet to come. Cory Friedman informed me … it is time to make another appearance and he will be bringing something “a bit faster” to Dragon VI. Heikki and Cameron are pushing each other and making a very entertaining rivalry. Jeremy Deitzel is planning on returning and I am sure he will be ready. There are some other cars/drivers we have not seen yet that have informed me they are coming and would like to leave the hill Sunday with a sword! You can bet that the hill record is going to fall next time we “Rock the Hill in Robbinsville!” Individual classes are heating up and more class records are getting challenged. What we have had at Dragon I, II, II, IV and V has been great… but the best is YET TO BE! ” – Ted Theodore
